about

Cougar Sweat returns with a new single and a new game plan for 2020. With “Sins and Skeletons” the boys hit the ground running in a big way; it’s surely their most developed writing and fully conceptualized effort to date. Established fans of the duo will recognize familiar themes; a profoundly fun, somewhat self-deprecation interaction between jangly guitars and sizzling drums, relatable, boy next door lyrics, and as always, a healthy dose of I-Don’t-Actually-Care mixed in. But there’s something different in the water now. It feels as if Caleb and Nate have upped the anti. From the first PBR cracking open in the beginning to the closing rumble of trippy, manipulated guitar drones yelping through an old, beat up Fender amp, this song rips. Caleb Chauncey and Nate Cook, two longtime friends, started Cougar Sweat in 2016. They spent that summer in the sweltering heat of the Appalachian south proudly carrying the banner of their adopted motto to everyone who would lend them an ear. “‘It’s Just Rock n Roll, Man’ became the easiest way to describe an attitude and sound all in one,” Cook says of that era. “Attitude: don’t take yourself too seriously, man. We’re here to have fun. Genre: Well...it’s just rock n roll.” That pioneer year the group played dozens of shows including The Georgia Theater Rooftop and Balcony TV. Building on these successes they loaded up the van and got on the road, touring all up and down the eastern seaboard in several tours and going on to open for Repeat Repeat and play Park Tavern’s Sunset Sessions.
The boys are back in town with “Sins and Skeletons” and it’s a magnificent thing. New year, new me? The modern adage seems to apply to Cougar Sweat. If the new single is any indication of what’s to come you’d be wise to keep your ear to the ground for these guys. You’re bound to hear them come rumbling in from miles away.
